Family stand together under oak tree

Our story

Our family set out at the beginning of 2020 to buy a home that would fit all four of our kids and had at least one tree (literally, at least just one)! Little did we know that such a task would at times seem insurmountable in an exploding all cash market that was sunny San Diego. By the summer of 2021 we had made offers on over 30 homes and yet to get one to stick.

Those 30 plus homes I could go into a whole separate story on, including one on top of a mountain with no running water or electricity where (out of love and slight insanity) I agreed it would be a FANTASTIC idea to live in a trailer with all four of our kids while we built a house from scratch! Thank goodness looking back that offer didn’t get accepted.

Enter the listing that would become much more than the home we had been seeking. Forty-five whole acres, two running creeks and a broken-down barn to boot! Mark fell in love the second he saw it. I took a little convincing. Once we found out it had at least three bedrooms under the same roof we knew it might be the one fate had been waiting to pass on to us. However, this new home option came with a whole host of factors we had not even considered before.

Avocados

More than just a home with enough space to fit six humans, the ranch was (and remains) a working avocado and citrus farm. With a full-time grove manager on site and monthly water bills that literally made my eyes cross from anxiety, I began to question if we could even make this option work. We were an engineer and a finance manager with no farming experience and four kids, could we really live on this farm full time and get it to work? We took a chance and offer 32 was accepted.

Dad and sons overlook mountains

Today our farm has 30 planted acres of Hass Avocados, five acres of organic Ruby Red Grapefruit and various family fruit trees we harvest in season. Our family four dogs, a pack of cats, three chickens now live on the Ranch full time and haven’t looked back. We hope you are as inspired by the Ranch as we are!
